You Swallow A Credit Card Of Plastic Every Week
You think plastic is somebody else's problem. Something for the oceans, the turtles, a documentary you feel bad watching.
It is inside you right now.
There is plastic in your blood. In your lungs. In your gut. And if you are a bloke, in your testicles too.
The average person eats, drinks and breathes around 5 grams of microplastic a week. That is the weight of a credit card. Ground into specks too small to see, swallowed without you ever noticing, one card at a time.
And your body has nowhere to put it.
It Does Not Just Pass Through
For years the story was comforting. You swallow a bit of plastic, it goes in one end and out the other. No harm done.
That story is dead.
These particles are small enough to slip through your gut wall and straight into your bloodstream. From there they travel everywhere. They have turned up in the heart, the liver, breast milk, and the placenta wrapped around unborn babies.
Once they lodge in your tissue, they sit there.
And they do not sit quietly.

The Hormone Hijack
Here is the part nobody warned you about. The plastic itself is only half the trouble.
Each particle works like a tiny sponge. It soaks up and carries chemicals that look, to your body, almost exactly like your own hormones. The soft, clear, shiny stuff baked into every plastic thing you own.
Your hormones run on keys and locks. A hormone is a key. It slots into a lock, the lock turns, something happens. Testosterone builds muscle. Oestrogen runs the cycle. Thyroid sets your energy for the whole day.
These plastic chemicals are fake keys.
They jam the locks. They flip switches that should stay off and block the ones that should fire.
The result is quiet chaos. Testosterone drifts lower. Cycles turn strange. Sperm count and quality fall. Your thyroid, the dial that sets your entire metabolism, gets nudged off its number.
You do not feel it happen. That is the whole problem. No alarm, no symptom on day one. Just a slow drift you blame on age, on stress, on a bad month.
Why Your Recovery Feels Stuck
Now drag it into the gym.
Recovery is not some mystery. It is repair. You break tissue down under load, then your body rebuilds it slightly stronger while you sleep. Hormones run that entire build crew.
Knock the hormones sideways and the crew clocks in slow.
There is a second hit too. These particles keep your body in a state of low grade inflammation and oxidative stress. That is a fancy way of saying you are stuck fighting a small fire that never fully goes out.
A body busy with a permanent fire has less left over. Less for building muscle. Less for healing a cranky shoulder. Less for bouncing back after a brutal week.
So you eat clean. You train hard. You sleep your 8 hours. And you still feel a half step behind.
Part of that drag is invisible. It is sitting in your tissue, and no rest day clears it out.
You can only bin one plastic habit this week. Which one goes first?
This Is Not Theory Anymore
For a long time this was easy to wave off as scare talk. It is getting harder.
In people who had plastic found buried inside their artery walls, the odds of a heart attack, stroke or early death over the following couple of years jumped sharply against those whose arteries came back clean.
That is the loudest signal yet. This stuff is not a passenger along for the ride. It changes what happens to you.
And the science is still young. What we can measure today is almost certainly the floor, not the ceiling.
What This Means For You
You cannot dodge plastic completely. It is in the rain and the air now. So stop trying to win the whole war and start winning the easy fights instead.
Never heat food in plastic. Heat is what makes plastic leak its chemicals fastest, so that microwaved lunchbox is doing the real damage. Tip the food onto a plate first.
Keep plastic away from anything hot, oily or sour. Coffee, fatty leftovers, tomato sauce. Those three pull the most chemicals out, so swap to glass, steel or ceramic where it actually counts.
Drink filtered water. A basic carbon filter traps a solid chunk of the particles floating in your tap, and it costs almost nothing.
Eat food that never met a factory. The more wrapping and processing between the field and your mouth, the more plastic rides along for free. Whole ingredients you cook yourself carry far less.
Bin the takeaway coffee cup. That cup is lined with plastic, and you are pouring boiling water straight onto it twice a day. Carry a steel one instead.
None of this is about living in fear. It is about giving your hormones and your recovery a fair fight.
Your body is already battling a fire you cannot see.

Article of the Week
Article Explained Simple: Nutrition responses differ by genetics
Two people eat the exact same breakfast. One walks away with a blood sugar spike. The other barely moves the needle.
Same food. Same portion. Same time of day.
Researchers have been picking apart why this happens, and the answer sits in your DNA. Small changes in your genes alter how you absorb, break down, and store what you eat.
Which means the diet that transformed your mate might do close to nothing for you.
This is not a get out of jail free card. It is not a reason to skip the basics.
But it does explain the frustration. You cut saturated fat, your cholesterol barely budges. Someone else does the same and drops 20 points.
The science has a name for it. Good responders and poor responders.
Same plan, followed properly, wildly different results.
The practical bit. Stop copying someone else's diet and expecting their outcome. Track your own numbers instead.
Real food, enough protein, plenty of fibre, sensible portions. That works for almost everyone.
Everything past that, you have to test on yourself.
Fascinating Fact:
Genetics can flip the direction of a result, not just the size of it. The same dietary change that lowers one person's blood lipids can leave another person's completely unmoved, or nudge them the wrong way.

Top 3 Travel Nutrition Tricks That Keep You Sharp on the Road
Airport junk food is not what wrecks you.
The damage happens in the 7 hour gap where you eat nothing at all, land dehydrated, and write off the whole week as a rest week.

Build the Fuel Kit Before You Build the Suitcase
Pack 2 to 4 shelf stable snacks for every day you are travelling. Jerky, nuts, protein bars, tuna packets, dried fruit.
A long haul flight gives you roughly 2 real eating windows. One shortly after take off, one about 2 hours before landing. Everything in between is your problem.
Every snack gets a carb and a protein. Crackers and tuna. Fruit and nuts. Never the carb on its own.
Never Let the Trip Open a Fasting Window
Eat every 3 hours you are awake. Travel days included. Especially travel days.
Missed fuel does not get made up at dinner. Your body just gives you a worse session, a slower recovery, and you quietly blame the time zone.
Set a repeating alarm for the 3 hour mark. It looks obsessive. It is also the difference between landing sharp and landing flat.
Drink Steady, Not Heroic
Cabin air is bone dry and pulls water out of you for the entire flight. Aim for around 1 cup every hour you are in the air.
Take an empty bottle through security and fill it the other side. A bottle in your hand beats a trolley that visits twice in 9 hours.
Add electrolytes to anything over 4 hours. Plain water on a long flight runs straight through you instead of into you.
Same food. Same clock. Same fluids.
Your body does not care that you are 30,000 feet up. It cares that you fed it.

Healthy Peruvian Grilled Fish Tacos Recipe (makes 4 servings)
Most fish tacos are battered, deep fried and buried under sauce until you cannot taste the fish at all. These go on the grill instead, so the cumin and smoked paprika actually come through.
You get 30g of protein per serving and a sharp red cabbage slaw that cuts straight through the smoke.

Macros per Serving
Total Calories: 400 kcal
Protein: 30 g
Carbohydrates: 35 g
Sugars: 5 g
Fat: 15 g
The Ingredients
500g (1.1 lbs) white fish fillets, such as tilapia or cod
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Juice of 1 lime
200g (7oz) red cabbage, thinly sliced
1 small carrot, grated
2 tablespoons fresh coriander, chopped
2 tablespoons Greek yogurt
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
8 small corn tortillas
1 avocado, sliced
The Instructions
Preheat the grill to a medium high heat. You want it hot enough that the fish sears the moment it lands, because a cool grill is what makes fillets stick and fall apart.
In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper and the lime juice. Brush it over both sides of the fish. Let the fillets sit for 2 minutes so the spices grab on properly.
Grill the fish for 3 to 4 minutes on each side. It is ready when it flakes apart with a fork and the middle has lost its glassy look. Flip it once and only once, constant turning is what breaks white fish.
In a large bowl, combine the red cabbage, grated carrot, coriander, Greek yogurt and apple cider vinegar. Mix until every strand of cabbage is coated. The yogurt does the job mayo usually does, with a fraction of the fat.
Warm the corn tortillas on the grill for about 30 seconds a side. You are after soft and lightly charred, not crisp. Stack them under a clean tea towel so they stay warm while you build.
Break the grilled fish into rough chunks and load it onto each tortilla. Pile the slaw on top, then finish with the avocado slices. Rough chunks hold the slaw better than neat slices do.
Serve straight away. Corn tortillas go rubbery the longer they sit, so get them on the plate while the fish is still hot.
