Salt Sensitivity Varies. Here Is How To Test Yours

Your gym mate cuts salt and drops water weight overnight. You do the same thing and feel flat, dizzy, and cramp on your second set.

That is not you being weak. That is biology.

Blanket low salt advice gets handed out like it applies to everyone equally. It does not. Athletes and heavy sweaters in particular get caught out by generic guidance built for sedentary people with high blood pressure, not for someone training hard four times a week.

Salt Sensitive vs Salt Resistant

Roughly half the population is salt sensitive. The other half is salt resistant. This is not a spectrum you can eyeball. It is a real physiological difference in how your kidneys handle sodium.

Salt sensitive people see their blood pressure rise meaningfully when sodium intake goes up. Salt resistant people barely move at all. Genetics plays a role here. So does age, kidney health, and ethnicity, with some populations showing higher rates of salt sensitivity than others.

Neither group is broken. They are just wired differently.

The Mechanism, Plain English

Your kidneys are the gatekeepers. They decide how much sodium stays in your blood and how much gets flushed out in urine.

In salt resistant people, extra sodium gets excreted efficiently. Blood volume stays steady. Blood pressure stays steady.

In salt sensitive people, the kidneys hang onto sodium more stubbornly. Sodium pulls water with it. More water in your blood vessels means more volume, and more volume means more pressure on the vessel walls.

A hormone system called RAAS sits behind most of this. Renin, angiotensin and aldosterone tell your kidneys how much sodium to reabsorb, while antidiuretic hormone controls how much water you retain alongside it. In salt sensitive people, this signalling runs a bit hotter, so the same plate of food produces a bigger fluid shift.

There is a second piece most explanations skip. Your blood vessels are supposed to relax and widen when sodium goes up, which helps your body accommodate the extra volume without a pressure spike. This relies on nitric oxide, a molecule your blood vessel lining produces to signal the surrounding muscle to loosen. In salt sensitive people, this relaxing response is often blunted, so the same volume increase pushes pressure up more.

None of this is dangerous by default. It just means your body responds differently to the same input.

Why Some Lifters Feel Worse on Very Low Salt

Sodium is not just a blood pressure lever. It is the main electrolyte your body uses to hold fluid inside your cells and blood vessels.

Cut salt hard and your blood volume drops. Less blood volume means less fluid getting pumped to your muscles during a hard set. That shows up as flat pumps, early fatigue, and dizziness standing up from a bench.

It also messes with your sodium and potassium balance, which your nerves and muscles rely on to fire properly. Sodium is what triggers the electrical signal that tells a muscle fibre to contract. When levels run low, that signal gets weaker and less consistent, which is part of why cramping and heavy, sluggish training days show up within days of going very low salt, even while eating enough calories.

Your body needs sodium to function. The question is how much, not whether.

How to Test Your Own Response

Forget guessing. Run this over 1 to 2 weeks and let your own data decide.

Week one is your baseline. Keep sodium intake as close to your normal habits as possible and record it. Read labels, note added salt, sauces, and processed food, and get a rough daily gram figure. You do not need lab precision, just a consistent estimate.

Week two, change one variable. Either cut sodium by around a third, or increase it noticeably if you already eat low salt. Keep everything else the same, training, sleep, water intake, carbs. Changing more than one variable at a time will muddy your result.

Track three things daily, at the same time each day.

Morning weight, taken after you wake up, after your first toilet visit, and before eating or drinking anything. Use the same scale in the same spot.

Blood pressure, if you have a home cuff. Sit down, rest your arm on a table at heart height, and stay still and quiet for five minutes before measuring. Take two readings a minute apart and average them, same time each morning, ideally before caffeine.

Training feel, using a simple 1 to 10 scale for pump, energy, and cramping, logged straight after your session while it is fresh.

If your weight and blood pressure barely move across the change, you lean salt resistant. If they swing noticeably, particularly blood pressure climbing on the higher sodium days, you lean salt sensitive. If training feels notably worse on the low sodium week specifically, that is useful information regardless of which group you fall into.

Two weeks gives you a real pattern instead of a single noisy data point.

Sweat Sodium and Hot Training Days

Sweat rate and sweat sodium concentration both vary a lot between people. Some people sweat salty enough to see white marks on dark kit after training. Others barely lose noticeable sodium at all.

Heavy sweaters training in heat, or doing long sessions, can lose several grams of sodium in a single workout. Following generic low salt advice on top of that is a fast route to cramping, headaches, and poor recovery.

If you notice salt marks on your clothing, or you get cramps specifically on hot or long training days, you are likely losing more sodium through sweat than average. That is a physical signal worth listening to, not a reason to panic about your diet the rest of the day.

What This Means For You

Stop applying general population advice to your specific body without checking first.

Run the two week test above before changing your long term sodium intake in either direction.

If you train hard, sweat heavily, or train in heat, do not default to very low salt. Match intake to what you actually lose, and pay attention to cramping and pump quality as real signals.

If your home blood pressure readings climb noticeably on higher sodium days, that is useful information to bring to your doctor, not something to self diagnose.

Track morning weight for a few weeks if you want a simple ongoing check. Big daily swings often point to sodium and fluid shifts rather than fat gain or loss.

Your body already tells you which camp you are in. You just have to measure it instead of guessing.

Your body is already battling a fire you cannot see.

Stop handing it fuel.
